Blob War – Ludum Dare #27

So this weekend was Ludum Dare 27, and after a few times of half finishing a game or giving up before starting, I decided this time I would finish a game, and finish it properly. So I took a couple of days off work, one before the weekend to prepare and one after to recover from the lack of sleep and brain-death – and the result of which is “Bob Loblaw’s Blob War“. I’ve had the idea for this game for a while now, and I think it turned out pretty well for a weekend type deal. The only problem was the theme being shoehorned into the game cause it to fall flat if you aren’t thinking of the theme at all. The theme is “10 seconds” by the way. So the time mechanic was based around that theme, and the placement of units was made around that 10 second … Continue reading

Rant Rant Rant – GW2

It has been well over a month now since Guild Wars 2 was released, and despite all the hype that has been built up for however many years, it actually turned out pretty good. The usual pattern the past few years for new MMOs has always been: hype, hype, hype, release, die. Nothing seems to last long in the MMO genre nowadays – for new games at least. The spectacle and wonder of the new game certainly draws people in, but they can’t seem to hold them. Guild Wars 2 is holding people. It is living up to all the hype, and people are still playing in large amounts – and this is great, because it really is a wonderful game. I say all this just to preface the following story – I really do love this game, and despite what I’m about to talk about, I will still play and love … Continue reading

Babel Rising

Babel Rising is an action strategy game where you play the part of a spiteful god, raining down your smite on the plebeians that are trying to appease you with their architectural prowess. Alternatively – you throw rocks at peons to stop them building stuff. Buildings suck, smash them all. When you hear the premise to this game it sounds freakin’ sweet. Who doesn’t love to pull out some godly powers for no other reason than killing small ant-like creatures? It really is satisfying sometimes when you can just sit down and kill shit for no good reason – so going into this game, I thought it would be pretty fun, and it is…for a while. The gameplay is a bit like a tower defense, except the AI is building the tower, and you have to defend it from being completed. So it is more like a tower offense – kill them (and the tower) before … Continue reading

Defy Gravity: Extended

With the Steam Summer Sale going on right now, it is rather impossible to not pick up any and all games that are within your budget. Luckily for me I’ve found some money recently, so I’ve has some to spare just in time for the sales to start. Consequently this means that I have spent far too much on games these past few days, and will likely spend more as the week progresses. So in spite of Steam eating everybody’s cash, there are some pretty great deals that you can get during this sale. One game I have stumbled across is Defy Gravity Extended, a neat little indie action platformer, that is currently on sale for about $1.50. It is very hard to not pick up games at this price, even if they turn out to be shit. Luckily for me, this game isn’t. In this game you are a … Continue reading

More Wurming

After my last Wurm post I kinda dropped off for a while, until not long after the new Freedom server, named Celebration, was opened. I’ve packed up and sailed down to that server now, and am in the middle of creating a new deed there. The map for this new server is rather amazing, and I’ve already managed to get a few awesome screenshots from it in the short time I’ve been here, including a panorama shot I managed to get late last night while on a trip around my area with a friend. The area I’ve managed to settle in is just on the ridge of the first image above, and you can just see it in the middle, right most part of the panorama. One good thing I’ve managed to remember with this deed is to get a before shot of the area I’m working on, and am … Continue reading

A New Gamer

Recently my Granddad came over from New Zealand to stay with us for a few months. New Zealand can get pretty cold during the winter, and he doesn’t like the cold so much, so comes over to sit in the sun while everyone else in NZ freezes. Australia can be good for that I guess. So last night I was fluffing around on Minecraft, and he walked past and saw me playing. He made some comment about how good the game looked, all ‘real’ and shiny. I scoffed a little inside, and booted up Skyrim to show him a bit. I think he liked the look of it, so my Mum suggested I sit him down today and get him playing a bit. So I did. A person who has never played a game beyond Blackjack on his PC, and I sat him down and threw him straight into Skyrim. Naturally there is some … Continue reading

New Theme, New Post!

I spent a lot of time yesterday waiting. If you have to ask what for, then you don’t deserve to call yourself a gamer. If you don’t call yourself a gamer, then I was waiting for Diablo 3 to release and unlock and become playable so I could sink my life into it slowly. Unfortunately, as most people would know by now, for the first few hours after ‘launch’ the only game people were playing was “Who can beat error 37 first”. The Battle.net servers were clogged with a billion nerds trying to all get in and play at the same time. At this point I would have a go at DRM and how bad it is and how everyone who thinks it is good is a very silly person, but I will not. Maybe another day. No, today I post because of the thing I was doing while waiting for the … Continue reading

Back into Wurm

With the release of indoor walls last week, I’ve started playing Wurm properly again. For the past year or two (I honestly cannot remember now), I have had a pretty decent account in most skills that I was using for day to day skills, building, mining etc. While I had this account, I turned my ‘Budda’ account into a priest, meaning it could start to cast spells and stuff, but be fairly useless for building, improving, and pretty much every other skill. Unfortunately a couple of months ago I was forced to sell the good account as I was low on cash, so having started playing again, I was left without a proper account to play with. This led me to the decision to de-priest my original account. So I slowly watched my priest’s Faith drop from 52 down to 30, at which point it automatically de-priested. It was a … Continue reading

BioBattle – Ludum Dare #23 Game

Well I finished my entry for Ludum Dare early in the morning today, and have now had a sleep to refresh myself, so it is a good time to write a post about my experience.   The idea for BioBattle comes from an old game I played many years ago that has dropped off the planet, called Battlethingz. Feel free to search that name, you’re not likely to find much about it, believe me, I’ve tried. Battlethingz was a pretty small multiplayer game where you and your opponent each had a monster that you battled against each other with. That monster was something of your own creation out of various parts. Each of those parts gave your monster a different skill to use in battle. It was a very different take on strategy and battle games like Pokemon. For BioBattle, I decided to do something along the likes of Battlethingz, … Continue reading

Ludum Dare #23

Just a quick post to say that I am entering Ludum Dare 23 this weekend. As of this writing it starts in 2 hours, so no idea what I’ll be making yet. I was planning to repost the blog posts I make on the Ludum Dare site, but since there is no easy way I’ll just give you this link. If you are interested in what’s going on (and if I post during the competition), it will be here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/author/budda/ On a related note, I will be creating a timelapse of the 48 hours, so I’ll have a video up with the finished game after it is all done. Wish me luck.
