Rant Rant Rant – GW2

It has been well over a month now since Guild Wars 2 was released, and despite all the hype that has been built up for however many years, it actually turned out pretty good. The usual pattern the past few years for new MMOs has always been: hype, hype, hype, release, die. Nothing seems to last long in the MMO genre nowadays – for new games at least. The spectacle and wonder of the new game certainly draws people in, but they can’t seem to hold them. Guild Wars 2 is holding people. It is living up to all the hype, and people are still playing in large amounts – and this is great, because it really is a wonderful game. I say all this just to preface the following story – I really do love this game, and despite what I’m about to talk about, I will still play and love … Continue reading

Secret of the Magic Crystals

There has been a couple of times in the past where I have found a brilliantly cheap game (that is obviously the best game ever) on Steam, and gifted it to Dante to play. Today he returned the favour and gifted me Secret of the Magic Crystals to play. I had never seen or heard of this game before, and going off the title I figured it was something to do with magic crystals and secrets. So I quickly downloaded and installed it while I was waiting for my Mass Effect 3 copy to install, and had a quick play. The game starts out with a nice story to set things up. A meteor has crashed into the planet, and the crystals were lost. What crystals? Well the ones in the meteor of course! Silly you, not knowing that. So your granddaddy finds 2 of these crystals somehow, and quickly realises that they … Continue reading

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Part 2)

So I’ve played a total of 24 hours of Skyrim since it’s release now and I figured I had better give my impressions of it. Instead of the usual reviews you will find all over the internet explaining how the UI sucks and its a shoddy console port, I am going to tell one of the better stories I have from playing Skyrim. If you want to know about the functionality and how bad it sucks, you can go read that somewhere else. A bit of background on my character build first. I’ve gone the route of thief archer. I sneak everywhere, and take long shots at peoples heads with my elven bow. Half of the time they are too stupid to figure out where the arrow came from, so I can normally clear out an area by just doing this, and I prefer it to rushing in head first … Continue reading

Online 2D Gaming Potential

I was recently perusing the forums over at GameDev.net and I saw a post there regarding an online remake of one of my all time favourite games, Shining Force 2. If you have never played Shining Force 2 before, let me give you a quick rundown. It’s awesome. It is a rather old 2D RPG that was originally released on the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive). It had a pretty unique combat system though. Instead of the seemingly industry norm of each side (good v bad, dark v light, etc etc) lining up then slashing the shit out of each other, Shining Force went for more of a Strategy type of combat mode, and it pulled it off spectacularly. Each side controls its characters of the party one by one, moving them around the battlefield with restriced steps each turn, then can do an action at the end of their move, … Continue reading
