The Beginning of Nothing

In a continuation of the last post, I have decided to begin a small-ish project. This will be an online 2D game, shock horror. A day or two ago I started looking around for suitable libraries in Java to (try) create this game, and came across a few, but only one that seemed to stand out from the rest. That is Slick. It seems to be a well rounded library for creating 2D games in Java, and it supports an already created map editor, Tiled, which makes my job that much easier. I had a wee play around with it to see how it all works, and got a very simple window rendering a giant black background, good start don’t you think? Online 2D Gaming Potential

I was recently perusing the forums over at GameDev.net and I saw a post there regarding an online remake of one of my all time favourite games, Shining Force 2. If you have never played Shining Force 2 before, let me give you a quick rundown. It’s awesome. It is a rather old 2D RPG that was originally released on the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive). It had a pretty unique combat system though. Instead of the seemingly industry norm of each side (good v bad, dark v light, etc etc) lining up then slashing the shit out of each other, Shining Force went for more of a Strategy type of combat mode, and it pulled it off spectacularly.
